In the southwest corner of Massachusetts sits a cluster of state parks noted for their spectacular scenery and breathtaking views. Situated high on a mountain plateau, much of this forest was once clear-cut between the late-1700s to mid-1800s, to produce charcoal fuel for local iron forges. Today, amidst the re-grown red oak-northern hardwood forest, the 4,169 acre Mount Washington State Forest offers 30 miles of trails over rugged terrain and wilderness camping. Hike the South Taconic Trail to the 2,250 ft. high summit of Alander Mountain for amazing views. Or follow the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way along the ridgeline and through Sage's Ravine. Springtime features include blooming mountain laurel and azalea, and in summer, a carpet of ferns.

At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. Rising above the surrounding Berkshire landscape, Greylock offers panoramic views of five states. Acquired by the Commonwealth in 1898, Mt. Greylock was Massachusette's first wilderness state park, and was designated to preserve its natural environment for public enjoyment. A network of trails traverse the mountain, making its peak easily accessible by foot while offering more challenging climbs for the experienced hiker. A seasonal road also leads to the top, allowing motorists to enjoy the view.
October Mountain State Park
Within shouting distance of Eastover (and the echo confirms that!)
Eastover Estate & Retreat is cradled to the east by the October Mountain State Park. At 16,500 acres, October Mountain is Massachusetts’ largest state park. (Legend has it that American author Herman Melville, whose home looked out upon this range of hills, anointed the area as “October Mountain.”) This mountain range is criss-crossed with trails for year-round enjoyment, and includes the Washington Mountain Marsh Interpretive Trail, a portion of the Appalachian Trail, and a trail leading through scenic Schermerhorn Gorge.
